Global navigation - best practices

What are some of the best practices when designing global navigation menus that tie together multiple websites that have no common layouts, color schemes or typography?

I've looked at examples such as gap.com where each sub-brand (Old Navy, Banana Republic etc.) has its own look and feel but a sense of familiarity is kept with the global top navigation menu and footer. Any more good examples of how these type of navigations could be designed?

Thanks!
